In a developing world, people tend to neglect the essence of virtue just to survive and create a name for themselves. With this neglectful act, we can see a lot of corruption, murder, rape and many heinous crimes committed by a number of people.
What is virtue anyway? According to Britannica, there are two kinds of virtue: moral and intellectual. Moral virtues are exemplified by courage, temperance, and liberality and a lot more; while intellectual virtues are wisdom which governs ethical behavior and understanding. A person with virtue has good moral and would stand to what is right no matter what the cost.
In our society today, people don’t know how to justify what is morally right because they lack virtue. Rather, they tend to cling to what is abhorrent and even fight for it. They neglect the importance of having a virtue just to get what they want.
An example for this is corruption in the government. If government officials have virtue, they won’t steal the people’s money, but rather, use it for the better good. If these people have fear and love for their country or community, they won’t do such things that could harm or bring their economic situation down.
Another example is people who commit crimes. Why do they commit crimes? Is it because of lack of money or some other personal reasons? The root cause for that is the lack of virtue that they have within themselves. I can see a lot of destitute people who strive to reach the top and they did it without even doing such immoral act.
If only all of us have virtues within ourselves, then our country or the place we live in would be peaceful and in harmony with other nations and people. There will be no wars, crimes, corruption or discrimination in our society or around the world.
This is how valuable virtues are in our life. With virtue, we tend to love, give and forgive, encourage, be humble and honor our fellow-men. They say that knowledge is important but what is knowledge without good character, right? You may gain the whole world but at the end, people will mock you for the bad things you’ve done. So live life to the fullest and live it with virtues!
